Fenix L2D: The Everything Torch

September 1st, 2010 by toolkit

The slim Fenix L2D Premium Q5 flashlight just rocks. Weighing in at only 3.2 ounces with Lithium batteries, the L2D throws out a lot more light than most would expect from a AA power source. It incorporates the new technology I spoke to in my “Shedding Some Light” video (www.youtube.com Despite using these easy-to-find ubiquitous power cells, this light cranks out some impressive brightness levels and run times: low power at 12 lumens: 55 hrs, med at 53 lumens: 105 hrs, high at 107 lumens: 4 hrs, SOS/Turbo mode at 180 lumens: 2.4 hrs. This performance is made possible with digital regulation/control that maximizes and smoothes power delivery to the extremely bright Cree 7090 XR-E LED. Variances can be expected with different power cell types and temperature but generally speaking L2D can crank out a lot of usable light to about 50 meters (your mileage may vary!). Other upside includes: fits in a military flight suit knife pocket, can function as a kubaton defensive tool, waterproof to IPX-8 standards, quality construction throughout, glass lens with AR coating, numerous included accessories (belt carry case, lanyard, o-rings, and switch cap cover), tactile click switch thats easy to manipulate in cold or loud conditions, flush mounted switch (allows vertical standing of the light for “lantern” use), well-culminated beam with no artifacts from the textured reflector, and some very useful accessories like a diffuser tip, wand extension, headband, and bike light mount (all

Computer Maintenance Tool Kit – Spyware, Registry Cleaners and Driver Scanners Are Needed

August 28th, 2010 by toolkit

It is not a pleasant thought but every time we use our computers, and sometimes when we are not using them, they are being bombarded by many kinds of enemies working to destroy them!  Most of us are aware of some of these enemies like spyware and viruses.

However, two problems most computer owners have not yet become familiar with are registry corruption and misfit device drivers. Though these two computer adversaries are not sent out to attack our computers per se, they inevitably end up in our computers and while they are there they can cause great harm.

In this article, we will discuss the three most invasive and pugnacious enemies every computer owner needs to know how to deal with. This dastardly trio includes the much-publicized problem of spyware and the two less notorious troublemakers registry corruption and misfit device drivers.

Antispyware Programs Must Be Used

We have no choice but to delete spyware and other similar types of programs from our hard drives. These things can do untold harm to our computers’ operating system health and our financial health as well.

If we were determined to use only one computer maintenance tool it would be a terrible decision, but that one tool should be a spyware cleaner. This is because if we don’t clean the spyware out of our computers, the spyware might clean us out financially by stealing all our banking information and passwords.

Registry Cleaners Are Also A Must, Too!

Whenever software is upgraded or deleted from a PC, it causes corruption to form in the registry. Of course, if one had great resolve, he or she could probably go a very long time without deleting or upgrading any normal types of computer software.

However, there is another kind of software we often don’t think of as software which everybody needs to delete from his/her computer regularly. This software is spyware, adware, viruses and all those other types of parasites. Yes, even though they are unwanted software programs, they are still software programs and when they are removed, they will leave registry corruption in their wake.

Today’s great big OS’s, Windows XP and Vista, have great big registries. So, a computer must use a whole lot of computing power to perform each of its operations. Registry corruption adds more obstacles to these operations and this results in a computer that operates below its potential speed.

So, registry cleaners are needed to keep the operating system free of the extra workload registry corruption saddles it with. Aside from causing the operating system to complete each command in a slogged down fashion, a heavy dose of registry corruption can actually cause a major operating system failure. So in retrospect, cleaning the registry with a good registry cleaner often is not so arduous a task.

Device Drivers Are An Up And Coming Maintenance Tool

Finally, there is one more problem a computer owner needs to be aware of. While this one does not threaten anybody with identity theft like spyware can and it cannot totally destroy an operating system like registry corruption can, it can make a computer very slow and suffer spells of erratic behavior.

This problem is misfit drivers. Simply put, drivers can become misfit because operating systems upgrades themselves and device drivers do not upgrade themselves. So, device drivers can be left in the dust, so to speak. This can cause internal incompatibilities within the operating system and the result will be a slow computer.

The answer to this problem is to get a free driver scan. This will tell you if you have a misfit driver. Beyond doing so, a good driver scanner will actually upgrade the offending device driver with a compatible one. More and more, driver scanners are gaining recognition as a necessary computer maintenance tool

In conclusion, if you want to be thorough about keeping your computer working in the best possible condition, you will consider having three different computer maintenance tools onboard.

First, a spyware scanner is an absolute necessity.
Second, a registry cleaner is also a “can’t do without tool” if you have Windows XP or Vista and,
Third, consider getting a driver scanner if you do clean the spyware and registry corruption out of your computer regularly and your computer is still slow and/or running poorly.

The Basic Home Repair Tool Kit – Part One

August 20th, 2010 by toolkit

Wrenches, Pliers, Grips and Snips.

The basic home repair tool kit has changed over the years. When I was a boy, I do not remember seeing any power tools in father’s vast array of carpenters’ tools. The brace-and-bit and folding wooden rule have gone these days. Nowadays, everything needs to be plugged in or recharged. Not a bad thing at all, but not being a carpenter, like my father before me and his before him.

I wonder how mobile power tools makes the professional carpenter. My father’s tool bag was a tarpaulin bag that opened with a very wide mouth so that all the tools could be displayed without removing them from the bag, making selection easy. He could take everything he need up onto a roof with him. I imagine that his father’s tool bag looked very similar, probably indistinguishable. Now, you need a van to carry everything and leads and a generator or rechargeable tools.

However, the jobs to be done remain the same and the rule for buying tools remains the same, buy the best you can afford. So, let’s take a look at a modern, well-equipped set of tools.

Adjustable Wrenches or Spanners: Often called a Crescent wrench (USA) or monkey spanner (UK). This is a necessity, because you can adjust the size of the jaws to fit the nut you want to turn. It is not a replacement for a set of spanners (UK) (USA: wrenches), because the large jaws make it impossible to use in confined spaces, but it is the first spanner you should buy. However, this spanner comes in various sizes too. The most useful is the 10 inch monkey spanner, which will adjust up to 1.125 inches, but you may like to get a smaller one too.

Pro Tip: always use the wrench so that the force is absorbed by the fixed half of the jaw.

Pliers: There are several kinds of pliers: the traditional type for holding, twisting and cutting thin wires; tongue-and-groove pliers, which is similar to a monkey spanner and lockable pliers. The first type of pliers is most useful for electrical work. The second type, which has adjustable jaws where a tongued pivot slides along a grooved slot to engage at the desired width, is mostly used for plumbing. The third type is also adjustable, by means of a knurled screw mounted in one of the handles. However, on squeezing the handles together, it will lock fast with a grip like a vise, giving them their common name of vise-grips. They are very powerful and will damage wood.

Pro Tip: keep some slats, like lolly sticks, handy to insert between the jaws and any delicate surface you may want to preserve.

Tin Snips: These are used for cutting relatively thin sheets of metal like lead flashings and aluminium sidings. The are also ideal for cutting wire or fencing like chicken wire. Standard tin snips cannot handle cutting in a pattern, but are excellent at straight lines and broad curves. For more intricate designs you will need aviation sheers, which can handle that job because of their smaller, pointed noses.
